Lady Gaga, who has openly fought bullying and intolerance since she sky-rocketed to fame, announced the start of her "Born This Way Foundation" Wednesday, an organization that aims to "foster a world where youth are empowered, humanity is embraced, and individuality is encouraged," as noted on the foundation's website.

The project will be led by Gaga, with support from her mother, Cynthia Germanotta.

"Together we hope to establish a standard of Bravery and Kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment," the singer said in a statement about her foundation, which is named after her hit single and newest album.

The "Born This Way Foundation" will work with several partners, including the MacArthur Foundation, the California Endowment and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. The organization seems to be the next logical step in the pop star's campaign against bullying. In September, after feeling personally affected by the suicide of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer, she met with President Obama and asked for more stringent anti-bullying policies and argued that bullying "must become illegal. It is a hate crime."

Rodemeyer, who was bullied because of his sexual orientation, looked up to Gaga as a role model for acceptance and equality. As part of the "It Gets Better" project, he recorded a video expressing how he found peace and empowerment in Gaga's messages of self-love.

After news of his suicide spread, Gaga tweeted, "The past days I've spent reflecting, crying, and yelling. I have so much anger...It is hard to feel love when cruelty takes someones life...."

The "Born This Way Foundation" will officially launch next year.
