The initiative would have amended the state Constitution to define life “to include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof," according to the New York Times.

Had it passed, the initiative would have been a direct challenge to the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade, and would likely have resulted in legal challenges.

Elsewhere in the county, Kentucky's incumbent governor Steve Beshear, a Democrat, won re-election.  The November elections across the country are being looked to as a barometer of how the country may swing in the upcoming 2012 presidential race.
