The strikes will be held at Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills Nov. 17 after 93 percent of the union voted to approve the walkouts, the L.A. Times reports. The faculty union also plans to hold informational picketing at Cal State’s 23 campuses Tuesday and Wednesday.

The walkout will be the first Cal State faculty strike since collective bargaining began in 1983, according to the Associated Press. The union voted to strike in 2007, but called off the walk-out when a settlement was reached the day before the strike.

Union officials told the AP that faculty members from other campuses plan to travel to those striking next week to support their colleagues.

The plan to strike comes after administrators decided not to pay salary increases negotiated for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years, the AP reports.
