Andy Rooney, the former “60 Minutes” commentator who ended the weekly newscast for 30 years with his life lessons, pondering questions and valuable advice died Friday evening.

CBS News said Rooney died in a New York City hospital of complications following a minor surgery. He was 92-years-old.

Rooney’s last appearance on “60 Minutes” was October 2. In his final talk, the writer proclaimed, “Not many people in this world are as lucky as I’ve been.”

Inspired by his high school teacher who told him he was a good writer, Rooney spent his whole life writing. He wrote 15 book including his 2006 work, “Out of My Mind.” Before “60 Minutes,” Rooney contributed to the GI newspaper Stars and Stripes after being drafted into the Army.

In addition, Rooney wrote for Arthur Godfrey’ radio and television shows and later went on to write for even more CBS stars such as Garry Moore and Victor Borge.

Dateline NBC contributor Lester Holt tweeted Saturday morning, “Thanks to Andy Rooney for giving us so much to wonder about. You were one-of-a-kind. TV won't be the same without you.”

Well respected in the journalism community, Rooney’s humor, intelligence and scruff eyebrows will be missed.

"I've done a lot of complaining here,” Rooney said in his final broadcast. “But of all the things I've complained about, I can't complain about my life."
