Communist Party leaders, who fear they are losing power over public opinion, are pressed to reinforce social morality and cultural influence abroad following the controversial death of a toddler last week. 

The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) aims to limit "programs dealing with marital troubles and matchmaking, talent shows, game shows, variety shows, talk shows and reality programming" as part of an initiative by the Communist Party to regain control over "cultural industries that are fueling more independent viewpoints."

Per the SARFT order, the new format for the nation's 34 satellite TV stations will "expand the proportion of news, economic, cultural, science and education, children's, and documentary programming."

So what aspects of entertainment television are so detrimental to Chinese social values? According to the document, "money workship, hedonism, and extreme individualism" top the list, characteristics which ensure success in the American television market; Jersey Shore and Keeping Up With The Kardashians can testify. 

President Obama shares this sentiment with the Chinese government: he doesn't want his daughters watching The Kardashians either. In his Tuesday appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the president stated: "I am probably a little biased against reality TV, partly because there's this program on C-SPAN called Congress."
