With the October launch of Italian Vogue’s “Vogue Encyclo,” American Vogue’s “Voguepedia” has some competition.

“Voguepedia,” which was originally soft launched in May 2011, is still continuing to build its collections. On the site, viewers can search for designers, brands, models, personalities, and beauty, getting access to American Vogue’s archives from more than a century ago. It carries 119 years of American Vogue fashion readily available at any fashionista’s fingertips. With a click of the search button, viewers can find information such as the history, selected appearances, and collections of designers. It also tells people when the person first appeared in the magazine.

However, the site is far from finished. “Voguepedia” is still in its infant stages and many names have yet to be added. For example, the alphabetized designer list stops at Stella McCartney and there are only 11 names under the Personalities category. Many notables such as Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld are still left out. Nevertheless, with Anna Wintour as Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue and her affinity for perfection, there is no doubt the site will be flawless when it is completely done.

Italian Vogue recently launched a similar site, “Vogue Encyclo”, which was initially created with the same concept as “Voguepedia”. The site is originally in Italian but can be translated to English for American readers. The main difference between the two is that “Vogue Encyclo” invites reader submissions and is more like a blog, while the “Voguepedia” is essentially a fashion dictionary. The former allows readers to contribute articles on fashion and costumes, designers, photography, cinema, people, and more, and Vogue staffers review all submissions.

“We will try not to alter your pieces, but some will have to be modified and you have to accept that and not feel judged, just guided by someone who has more experience,” Italian Vogue Editor-In-Chief Franca Sozzani addressed potential contributors on her blog, according to Women's Wear Daily. “You can always use [your articles] on a future résumé to become journalists, if that is what you aspire to. I’m ready for controversy and complaints, but keep in mind that nothing is accomplished in a day… but in a few months, yes!”

Both sites have eye-catching pictures that complement their text.

Which one will have a greater impact on the fashion world? “Voguepedia” and “Vogue Encyclo” are unique in their own ways and will serve different purposes, but there is no question that both resources are assets to the fashion world.
