While it is a federal holiday, unlike other events, it's not really celebrated. Most schools are in session and most people are at work. I have never been invited to a Columbus Day Bar-Be-Cue.

Here are some fun facts:
1.    It is always the second Monday of October
2.    Columbus landed in the New World Oct 12, 1492.
3.    Three states do not recognize it at all! Hawaii, Alaska and South Dakota.

Other interesting facts can be found here.
