A van holding explosives swerved into an American military bus on Saturday killing 13 American soldiers and at least four Afghans.

The attack makes it the deadliest day of the decade-long war for U.S. troops in Afghanistan according to U.S. military and Afghan officials.

According to the Washington Post, such violence is rare in the city where the attack occurred (near American University on Darulaman Road in Kabul), particularly against U.S. troops who normally do not patrol there.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing through text messages, claiming that 1,500 pounds of explosives had been used to accomplish their goal.
