The U.S. Postal Service will raise the price of a regular stamp by 1 cent to 45 cents beginning Jan. 22, the Washington Post reported.

The last increase came in May 2009. The new increase is expected to generate almost $890 million, though the postal service spent about $10 billion more last year than it took in.

To further help ease the strain on its budget, postal service officials are lobbying Congress to end Saturday mail delivery and close another group of post offices across the country.
