Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa asked city officials Wednesday to draft restrictions limiting when people would be allowed on city property, saying that Occupy L.A.’s City Hall camp “cannot continue indefinitely,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

The mayor has also instructed city officials to identify a relocation plan for the demonstration.

According to the Times, Villaraigosa expressed his respect for the protesters’ rights, but said they must respect city laws and regulations.

Officials referred to law that states people may not camp in city parks after 10:30 p.m., though police have not been enforcing it against the hundreds of protesters.

About a dozen protesters attended Wednesday’s City Council meeting to ask officials to allow them to stay, the Times reported.

Alex Everett, 26, said many protesters wouldn’t leave without a fight. He told the Times that if police attempted to clear the protest like Oakland police did Tuesday, “it will be violent.”
