Jon Stewart Mocks "Crazy" GOP Presidential Candidate Rhetoric
Jon Stewart is taking the GOP presidential candidates for task for their "crazy" rhetoric following remarks by Pat Robertson--no stranger to controversial remarks himself--that the Republican candidates need to tone it down.
Among examples cited by Stewart: Rick Perry's recent comments doubting Obama was born in the U.S. (Perry later said he was just joking!); Herman Cain's remark about an "electrified" border fence (also just kidding! Or maybe not?); Mitt Romney calling corporations people; and Michele Bachmman's HPV vaccine story.
"Could you spot the trend," Stewart asked following the montage. "Here's a hint: they're all saying crazy thing."
Stewart then took on Pat Robertson, host of the "700 Club" program, for telling the GOP candidates that they needed to "lay off that stuff." Sounding shocked, and saying he didn't see that coming, Stewart said, "Is that Pat "Gay People Cause Hurricanes" Robertson expressing concern for how extreme the Republican Party has gotten?!"
Stewart then played clips of Robertson's own extreme rhetoric, including one where he equated gay marriage, bestiality, child molestation and pedophilia.
The Daily Show host pointed out that Robertson wasn't exactly taking Republicans to task for the content of what they were saying, but rather that they should keep quiet about the positions because they might be considered too extreme for a candidate to be elected.
"What he's telling the GOP field is this: if you tell people what we honestly believe, an electoral majority of those people will freak the f%*$ out," Stewart said.
He concluded: "He's saying the first rule of "right club" is, 'don't talk about right club!'"
