Univision Communications, America’s number one provider of Spanish-language television programming, announced today that it has agreed to allow Hulu, an online based video streaming site, to air its content.

This is Hulu’s first venture in to Spanish-language content, although CEO Andy Forssell assured The Hollywood Reporter that it would not be its last, claiming “you can expect us to be more aggressive in obtaining more Spanish-language content.”

Hulu’s desire to offer Spanish-language content seems prudent, considering the U.S. Census Bureau reports about 35.5 million American residents who use Spanish as their first language in their households.

Although the financial details of the agreement were not disclosed in the announcement, Univision did specify that a selection of its shows, coming from a variety of channels, will be made available on Hulu’s free, ad-supported service. A much more inclusive list of titles will be provided through Hulu Plus, a paid programming service. Hulu Plus currently costs $7.99 a month.

Univision’s most popular content is their famous telenovelas, although they are expected to also offer variety shows and reality television.

This is certainly interesting timing for the purchase, considering Hulu, which is partially owned by NBCUniversal, Disney and Fox, is rumored to be considering offers for a buy-out.

Hulu is expected to begin offering Univision content later this year.
