The GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain defended his 9-9-9 plan Sunday explaining a tax overhaul will benefit most Americans in lower economic brackets.

Cain addressed critics of his 9-9-9 tax plan on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday, saying his new plan, despite doubts, will benefit most Americans by creating compeition amongst buisnesses and replacing embedded or "invisible" taxes with visible taxes.

Cain's tax overhaul refers to a taxing system, which would create a new 9 percent federal sales tax on consumer goods, cut corporate tax to 9 percent and drop taxes on wages to 9 percent. The 9-9-9 plan, according to Cain, will produce a $2 trillion economic growth, create 6 million jobs and increase wages by 10 percent.

Critics of the plan, however, say the plan will increase taxes for the poor and offer tax benefits to the rich. In addition, Cain's overall economic plan, also includes eliminating exemptions and deductions currently in place according to some reports.

In defense of the plan, Cain said the 9-9-9 plan would replace embedded or "invisible taxes" on goods with a "visible 9 percent tax" and lower prices on products. The taxes inccured by manufacturers and distributers of goods, Cain says, adds up and is placed on the consumers. With his plan, Cain said, those taxes will be replaced with one fixed 9 percent tax.

"It makes it very visible, such that the American people can hold the feet of congress to the fire," Cain said in addressing the tax plan as a whole. "That's the thing we have that the current tax code does not have."

But when pressed to answer whether Americans with lower incomes would have to pay more taxes, Cain said, "Some people will pay more, but most people will pay less."

"The sales tax only applies to people who buy new goods, not used goods," Cain said.
