At night, along Venice Beach's prized Ocean Front Walk, the homeless sleep.

Some are artists. Others are at their aid. 

Along this boardwalk, the vending spots — where some of LA's most unique art is sold — are first-come, first-served. 

To many starving artists, these small spots are the only means to food, rent, survival. 

On Oct. 5, the Venice Beach City's Rec and Park Commission passed a draft ordinance to regulate vending on Ocean Front, designating some areas for artists and performers. 

Commercial vending has to go, artists says. 

However, the ordinance, for now, is only a draft. It must still pass through the City Council and be signed into law by the mayor. 

"Doh," a 36-year-old artist who crafts daily sand sculptures along Ocean Front Walk, has seen competition for spots heat up in his more than 20 years of showcasing his craft. 

"Your soul, that's what it cost to set up on Venice Beach," he says.
