GOP presidential candidates hit the Sunday talk show circuit to comment on recent allegations that Mitt Romney's Mormon religion is a "cult."

Texas pastor Robert Jeffress denied that Romney was a Christian to reporters after introducing Texas Governor Rick Perry at a value-voters forum Friday.

Jeffress said that Romney was a "good, moral person but someone who is part of a cult."

Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann both declined to answer the question directly when they appeared on CNN's "State of the Union."

"He's a Mormon, that much I know," Cain said.

Bachmann criticized the controversy as a distraction.

"To make this a big issue is ridiculous right now."

Other GOP candidates have come out in support of Romney. Rick Perry and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum have both denied that Mormonism is a cult and consider it part of Christianity because Romney self-identifies as such. Newt Gingrich made similar comments on CBS's "Face the Nation."

"He's a Mormon and Mormons define themselves as a branch of Christianity," Gingrich said. He also called Jeffress' comments "very unwise and very inappropriate."

Mormon's official canon includes the King James version of the Bible and recognize Jesus Christ as their savior.
