Opponents to the Dream Act, a legislation signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Oct. 8 that would allow undocumented students to receive financial college aid, were granted permission Friday in Sacramento to petition the measure.

The Sacramento Bee said that the opponents, who are being lead by Tim Donnelly, R-Twin Peaks, need 504,760 valid signatures from registered voters by Jan. 6.

According to the Bee, "Donnelly has said he hopes to wage a largely volunteer effort fueled by social media and talk radio."

Under the Dream Act, 2,500 students would qualify for Cal Grants which would cost roughly $14.5 million, or 1% of all the Cal Grant funds, according to the Calif. Department of Finance.
