Afghanistan expanded and extended its partnership with India this week, adding to the turmoil in the Middle East by broadening the division between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

India will "increase its training of Afghan army and other security personnel," the Wall Street Journal reported. Other provisions of the deal include cooperation in trade and mining (more on the mining compact in the video below).

Since the War in Afghanistan began 10 years ago this week, India has infused between $1 billion and $2 billion into Afghanistan. The Journal reported most of that has been for infrastructure projects and that India has been training Afghan forces since 2007. A few hundred security forces will be training each year and supplied with arms.

A foreign policy expert at the Brookings Institution wrote last week that Pakistan hopes to prevent a pro-India government in Afghanistan and drive NATO forces out of Afghanistan "by spectacular attacks" that help "convince Americans that the war is hopeless and that defeat is inevitable therefore give up now rather than later."

Both the U.S. and Afghanistan have accused Pakistan of supporting the Taliban, the same group NATO is trying to quash in Afghanistan.

President Barack Obama has called for nearly all of the American troops in Afghanistan to return home by the end of next year as Afghanistan attempts to keep peace on its own.
