British sensation Adele has been having a chart-topping year, but it has taken a dismal turn with tour cancellations and vocal problems. At the beginning of October, fans were dismayed to hear that Adele canceled the rest of her sold-out U.S. tour due to a hemorrhage on her vocal chords. Now Columbia Records has announced she is also forced to cancel her UK tour and any appearances for the rest of the year, and that the British singer will be undergoing throat surgery.

The statement reads, “She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat and a full recovery is expected.”

Laryngologist Dr. Lee Akst explained to the Los Angeles Times what a vocal hemorrhage means.

“The inability of the vocal cords to vibrate is what causes hoarseness, the main symptom of vocal hemorrhages,” he said. “The louder you use your voice the more violent the collisions, and the higher the pitch the more frequent the collisions. That’s why singers are at high risk.”

In July, Adele told BBC Radio 1 that she previously suffered a vocal hemorrhage right before a performance.

"But I sang through it, so that's why it popped. Then I got better and I got a bit of laryngitis, which is more normal," she said. Unfortunately this time she has more to worry about that just laryngitis.

Adele was very upset when she had to cancel her U.S. tour and wrote on her blog, "I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever.”

Adele’s latest album “21” is at its 13th week at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200. She is one of the five women to dominate the charts the longest in the chart’s 55-year history.
