Yemen Violence Enters a Third Day
“We were walking back from prayers. All of a sudden a rocket hit close by from out of nowhere, and some people fell down. And then a second one came and that's when we saw the two martyred,” Manea al-Matari, a protest organizer camped in the square told Reuters by phone.
Clashes between government and pro-democracy forces escalated on Monday after pro-democracy forces opened fire on government troops.
Tuesday’s rocket attacks targeted a camp in the capital of Sanaa filled with pro-democracy demonstrators. The demonstrators continue to call for President Saleh to formally step down. Saleh had reportedly been in negotiations to transition power but those negotiations have reportedly stalled.
At least 56 people were killed in clashes Sunday and Monday and protestors vowed to march again on Tuesday.
There are fears amid the international community that the situation in Yemen could deteriorate further into a civil war.
