Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, who has been absent from the public sphere since rebels overtook the capital in August, may have been spotted in the south of the country headed towards Niger or Chad, several media outlets reported on Tuesday.

Rebels have been searching the houses of Gaddafi supporters in recent days, but found no trace of the leader himself, according to the Associated Press.

Some Libyans loyal to Gaddafi escaped to Niger in a convoy, according to the Los Angeles Times, but the rebel Transitional National Council leadership does not believe that the former leader was among them.

"He's out of Bani Walid I think. The last tracks, he was in the Ghwat area. People saw the cars going in that direction," Hisham Buhagiar, the man in charge of finding Gaddafi, told Reuters. "We have it from many sources that he's trying to go further south, toward Chad or Niger."

The United States Department of State said it also does not believe Gaddafi was in the convoy, reported CNN.

Meanwhile, TNC officials say they're confident their search should stay focused on Libya.

"We're confident that Gaddafi didn't get out," said TNC spokesperson Jalal Gallal.
