Toys R Us announced Thursday it will hire more than 40,000 employees for stores and distribution centers for the 2011 holiday season.

Hiring will begin this week nationwide and continue through November. The toy seller said this season is consistent with hiring in previous years, between 35,000 and 45,000 seasonal workers.

Dan Caspersen, executive vice president of human resources, said in a statement that the seasonal staff is an important extension of their team.

“We are proud to create tens of thousands of jobs across the country this Christmas,” Caspersen said, “while providing the potential for hardworking individuals to find a permanent position with us.”

The company said 10 percent of the 2010 holiday workforce is currently employed at Toys R Us.
