As the Eurpoean Union readied a ban on new investments in Syria, government forces in the Middle Eastern nation have killed 33 civilians during the past day in the ongoing crackdown on uprising.

On Tuesday, government snipers went as far as shooting mourners at a funeral for people that had been killed in the crackdown the day before, Al Jazeera reported.

About 2,600 have been killed in protest violence since the beginning of this year in Syria, according to the United Nations. The government says only 1,400 have died while a separate human rights group says the death toll is 3,000.

For comparison, about 3,000 people died during the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States.
