Reaction To The GOP Presidential Debate

All eyes were on Rick Perry and Mitt Romney at Wednesday night's GOP Presidential Debate at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., and the two men did not disappoint. However, based on the post-debate analysis, it appears that Romney bettered Perry during their first debate match-up.

Here's a sampling of reaction from around the Internet.

From The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza: "Whether you liked or hated Rick Perry’s debate performance last night, it was hard to take your eyes off of him. From the start of the debate it was clear that Perry was going to mix it up. At times, his cowboy swagger worked (his exchange with Romney on jobs was a nice moment) and at times it didn’t (why attack Rep. Ron Paul?). But, Perry was always interesting and often charismatic. The debate revolved around him and the after-action analysis — was doubling down on Social Security as a “Ponzi scheme” smart or stupid? — did too."

From The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan: "My take-away? Perry has proved himself an extreme, inarticulate, incurious W clone. He doubled down on the vicious attacks on social security; and his rhetoric was off-key. Huntsman emerged as an actual candidate; Romney kicked ass. Bachmann is wearing thinner and thinner. Paul is Paul. Santorum is a Vatican crank. Gingrich is an angry old man. Cain has no business being up there. Perry's poor performance gives Palin an opening. And an actual argument that people can understand about economic policy did not emerge."

From The New York Times' Nate Silvers: "After Wednesday night’s debate in Simi Valley, I gave Rick Perry a B-minus, meaning an average performance. Meanwhile, I gave Mitt Romney, his primary rival for the Republican nomination, a higher grade of A-minus."

From The Washington Post's Ezra Klein: "Mitt Romney looked like he had already won the Republican nomination. Rick Perry looked like he will win the Republican nomination. Michele Bachmann looked like she was beginning to realize she definitely wouldn’t win the Republican nomination."

From The Los Angeles Times' Mark Barabak: "The other six candidates on the stage often seemed like extras, visible but silent much of the time as Perry and Romney poked each other under prodding from the moderators, NBC news anchor Brian Williams and Politico editor John Harris."

From Think Progress' Matthew Yglesias: "I don’t think this was any kind of fiasco for Perry or anything. But as an incumbent governor of a major state with a more consistently conservative record that Romney’s, his job was to try to ameliorate electability concerns. And he just didn’t."

From Political Wire: "It's very clear Mitt Romney has done this before because he looked like a long distance runner compared to the other candidates on the stage. He won the debate, but only because Rick Perry stumbled badly on several questions. In fact, Perry's doubling-down on his criticisms of social security may ultimately prove to be a fatal flaw as GOP primary voters gauge electability."

From Politico, which called Rick Perry "the clear frontrunner":

"The Texas governor got the most questions from questioners Brian Williams and John Harris, but he also absorbed the most punches from his competitors. When all the energy is concentrated in one direction, it underscores who is dominating the field - and last night it was Perry who was at the center of attention."

From CNN: "Mark McKinnon, a former adviser to President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain in their presidential campaigns, said the debate contained 'great theater, good fireworks. Rick Perry is the front-runner and he did nothing last night to knock himself off that status. Mitt Romney was solid as he has been in the recent debates.'"
Time's Mark Halperin graded all eight of the candidates, with Romney coming in first with an "A" grade, while Perry came in second with a "B+" grade.
