Tourists hoping to see the nation’s capital from the top of the Washington Monument will have to wait.  The National Park Service announced the tourist attraction would be closed indefinitely on Monday because of structural damage suffered in an August earthquake.

Officials had previously reported damage to the structure, including cracks in the mortar that holds the 555-foot obelisk together, but they said the damage was greater than first thought.  The monument has been susceptible to water leaks since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck and officials are concerned about water damage.

Engineers are set to rappel down the monument to check it brick-by-brick on Tuesday.

The National Park Service also released video from inside the monument at the time of the quake.
