The first managerial casualty of the 2011 MLB season is in the books, but Ozzie Guillen’s departure from his Chicago White Sox contract appears to have been amicable.

The colorful Guillen (678-617 in eight seasons with Chicago) was released from his contract Monday after the White Sox, with whom he is signed through 2012, failed to agree to his request for a contract extension and pay increase. The Sox retain Guillen’s compensation rights.

After a disappointing 2011 that has seen Chicago fail to reach .500, Guillen knew he would likely be spending 2012 on the proverbial hot seat.

“It was my call and I appreciate the White Sox organization letting me do what I like to do and what is best,” Guillen told Yahoo! Sports.

It seems that what Guillen would like to do is head to Florida to coach the Marlins, who have been looking to sign a flashy manager to go along with the flashy new ballpark they’re debuting next season. They certainly need the help - the Marlins will finish this season last in the NL East.

Guillen has met with Marlins management several times, and posted a blog Monday night expressing his excitement about joining the organization, according to the Chicago Tribune and Fox Sports. The blog post was rapidly pulled down, but ESPN reported Tuesday that Guillen will sign a four-year contract in Florida.

Guillen counts a pennant and a World Series title (2005) among his accomplishments in Chicago, but has become known for his fiery personality and seeming inability to censor himself.

"Life is about money," he said before his final game with the White Sox. "Am I going to die poor with the White Sox? Hell no."

He spent the first 13 seasons of his playing career with the White Sox, making the All-Star roster three times and winning a Gold Glove.
