"Everybody has to pay their fair share," said President Obama this morning.

That was the theme of the Obama speech this morning as he asked wealthy Americans to contribute more in terms of taxes.

Obama once again urged Congress to pass the "American Jobs Act" as he explained his plan to reduce the country's deficit.

Obama said the plan will reduce the deficit by $4.4 trillion dollars. According to the Los Angeles Times) it includes $1.5 trillion in higher revenues, letting go of the Bush tax cuts, and slowing down operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Here are some of the key points:

No more Bush Tax Cuts

  • This could create $800 billion from Americans in the upper income
  • $700 billion could come from closing loopholes including limiting tax breaks for oil companies

Let's end the wars

  • $1 trillion is saved from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

Warren Buffet Rule

  • People earning more than $1 million a year will pay same tax rate as people in the middle class.

Health Savings

  • $248 billion in savings from Medicare

Scouring the budget, reforming and making modest reduction in medicare is at the heart of the plan. Obama believes it takes a balanced approach, not just cutting programs. With any plan, Obama expects two key principles: the plan should raise revenue, and middle class families shouldn't pay higher taxes than millionaires and billionaires.

President Obama responded to critics who are against the plan, saying he is not trying to punish success in America. He just believes that people who are successful, do not deserve a better deal than what everyone else gets.

"It's not class warfare, it's math," said President Obama.
