Florida’s decision to move up the date of the state’s 2012 presidential primary is causing controversy.  The decision to move the Sunshine State’s primary to Jan. 31, made by a special committee, was announced on Friday.

The move was opposed by national GOP leaders and thwarts national primary rules that allow only four states: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina to hold primaries and caucuses prior to March 6.  These states are now expected to move up voting dates in an effort to remain first.

Florida officials wanted an earlier primary date in an effort to play a greater role in the primary season.
