Bold prints, lacey details and bright color palettes are dancing down the runways and lining the shelves of the hottest stores this season.

If you’re looking to add some flare to your wardrobe without breaking the bank, look no further: the six must-have fall fashion trends for the college student on a budget…and one approved style splurge.

#1: BOLD PRINTS

This fall, don’t be afraid to make a statement. Boldly printed blouses, shorts and sweaters can add pizzazz to even the most drab outfits! Take these bright, floral-print shorts for example. Ideal for Southern California’s warm fall air, pair these flowery shorts with an oversized sweater for a fun outfit that’s ready to conquer a busy day of classes. And at just $48, you can’t beat the price!

#2: A TOUCH OF LACE

Lace: an old standard in the fashion world. You simply can’t go wrong with the feminine elegance of a lace blouse, skirt or dress. It adds a flirty, vintage touch to any outfit. Try this adorable lace bustier top by Pins and Needles (urbanoutfitters.com): Dress it down by pairing it with jeans or take it out for a night on the town with a flowy skirt.

#3: MAXI SKIRTS

They come in fun prints, solids, cozy cotton, and sheer chiffon. You can dress them down with flats and a T-shirt or dress them up with a blouse. Maxi skirts are back in style and they’ve never looked better. Here’s a vintage-inspired maxi from Nordstrom, it screams 70’s boho-chic and for a mere $42, every college gal can work the modern hippie look this fall.

#4: OVERSIZED SWEATERS

Nothing says fall like a cozy, oversized sweater. It’s simple, relaxed, and a must-have piece for this season. Surprisingly versatile, the oversized sweater can be worn over leggings (think 80’s flashdance), draped over your favorite skinny jeans and even paired with a fun mini skirt. Who could resist cozying up to this H&M chunky knit sweater for just $29.95? Notice the glittery detailing in the fabric, a nice spin on the standard pullover.

#5: POLKA DOTS

The fashion world is seeing spots this fall. Polka dots are making a serious come back and they’re hotter than ever. Check out this Free People polka dot skirt…spot on, isn’t it? Fun, modern, and perfect for going out on the town, this skirt is a steal at just $48. Complete the look by pairing it with a flowy white top and a great pair of boots.

#6: MENSWEAR INSPIRED

This fall, female fashionistas should look to the trim and tailored look of menswear for inspiration. Structured blazers, boyfriend jeans, and oversized oxford shirts can add an effortless sense of style to any outfit. While it takes a bit of courage to work menswear-inspired pieces, when done right, can be oh so sexy. This herringbone blazer with suede detailing, for example, will look fabulous paired with a simple white T and jeans. (Stop by H&M and pick it for just $29!)

SPLURGE ALERT:

If you’re going to splurge on one item this fall, make it a great pair of boots. There’s no substitution for the quality of real leather and with proper care, a solid pair can last years. Madewell knows what they’re doing when it comes to quality footwear. Their Archive Leather boots in “English Saddle” (a honey, caramel brown color that will never go out of style) ring in at a whopping $298 but have no fear, these rich Italian leather boots will complete any outfit and remain your go-to fall shoes for years to come. Inspired by a traditional riding boot, the “Archive” hit right above the calf, making them ideal for tucking into your favorite pair of jeans.
