How bad are things for President Barack Obama right now? Not even California approves of the job he’s doing.

Only 46 percent of voters in the heavily Democratic state like what they see in the President, according to the latest Field Poll results, and just 40 percent approve of his handling of the economy. This is the first time the approval rating has dropped below 50 percent in the state since Obama took office.

Nonetheless, 49 percent said they would vote to reelect the President.

About 44 percent of California's 17 million registered voters list themselves as Democrats, whereas about 30 percent identify as Republicans.

California has one of the country’s highest unemployment rates at 12.4 percent. A report released Tuesday showed that six million California residents – more than 16 percent of the population – were in poverty in 2010 and one in five lacked health insurance. That’s a significant jump from the previous year.

According to a Gallup report released in early August, There are still 16 states in which more than half of voters give the President the thumbs up. The District of Columbia, Connecticut, Maryland and Delaware have the highest ratings.
