A mob of pro-government protesters attacked the convoy of an American ambassador in the capital city of Syria on Thursday following a meeting with an outlawed Syrian politician.

Protesters pelted Ambassador Robert Ford's car convoy with eggs, tomatoes, rocks and sticks, an unnamed source told Bloomberg, denting the ambassador's vehicle and cracking or shattering some of its windows.

"The mob was violent. it tried, unsuccessfully, to attack embassy personnel while they were inside several embassy vehicles, seriously damaging the vehicles in the process," US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said in a statement, according to the BBC.

Ford had been meeting with Hassan Abdul Azim, leader of Syria's banned Arab Socialist Democratic Union party.

About 100 people took part in the violent protest. The State Department reports that Ford is now safe.

The attack occurred as the United Nations Security Council is to consider condemning the continued killing of non-violent opposition protesters by government security forces.
