Tuesday marked the 15th anniversary of rapper Tupac Shakur’s death. Shakur died Sept. 13, 1996 of wounds from a drive-by shooting at the age of 25.

Shakur was driving with Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight after attending a Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon heavyweight championship fight in Las Vegas, Nev. on Sept. 7, 1996. Knight was driving the vehicle with Shakur in the passenger’s seat. A white Cadillac pulled up along Shakur’s side and fired 14 shots at the car. Shakur was shot once in the thigh, arm and twice in the chest. Knight suffered minor injuries from bullet fragments.

Shakur was taken to University Medical Center where he underwent two operations. Surgeons removed his right lung. He died six days later of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.

His killer has not been caught.
