Yesterday was the first day of fall classes for USC students, and the jump to college has not been seamless for even the talented freshmen on the Trojans team.

"Coming from high school, it's been a hard transition," freshman OL Aundrey Walker said, "Because college is a whole different level. After my first day of practice, I was tired. I had never been that tired.

Walker also talked about his hope to lose 25-30 pounds in his freshman season from his current weight of about 360 pounds.

"Sometimes I get a little fatigued in the middle of play," Walker said, "I just need to lose that extra weight so I can come out in the fourth quarter grinding." When asked what restaurants around USC he hoped to avoid, Walker joked, "Probably all of them."

LEE EARNS NEW NUMBER: Freshman wide receiver Marqise Lee has "definitely showed he's going to play a lot," according to head coach Lane Kiffin. Lee, who wore number 17 in camp, is now sporting his preferred number of 9.

"In order to get the number you want, you have to work for it," Lee said. And when Kiffin offered the number to Lee this past weekend, Lee responded, "Whatever you want, Coach."

POMEE OUT FOR SEASON: Freshman TE Junior Pomee will have surgery today on his broken foot, according to Kiffin. Pomee suffered the injury during Sunday's scrimmage.

"I thought he was doing great in the little time that we had him," Kiffin said. "So we're excited about getting him back. Hopefully he'll be ready for the spring."

AMBLES WITHDRAWS: Sophomore wide receiver Markeith Ambles has withdrawn from USC. He played in two games last season and recorded a catch against Washington State.

"I met with him, and he's no longer with [the program]," Kiffin said. "We wish him the best of luck."

COMFORTABLE AT QB: While Kiffin would not name a winner in the battle for second-string quarterback between freshmen Cody Kessler and Max Wittek, he expressed his surprise at having confidence in both players.

"I think both of them can go in there and play for us right now," Kiffin said. "And I'm almost shocked that I'm even saying that."

INJURY REPORT: DE Zack Kusnir, DT J.R. Tavai, S Marshall Jones, TE Christian Thomas, WR De'Von Flournoy did not practice today. LB Dion Bailey, CB Taylor Ashton, RB Curtis McNeal, and WR Kyle Prater left practice early today, but their injuries are not expected to be serious.

Matt Barkley also spoke with the media today. His interview can be found at the bottom of this page.
