The Weezer front man is a consummate entertainer, and his combination of energy, style, and casual coolness was perfect for an appreciative audience enjoying a simple Thursday evening out at the Orange County Fair.

Cuomo's connection with the crowd, comprised of Weezer diehards scattered intermittently amongst a larger population of casual fans, was apparent from the start. That connection intensified the longer Weezer remained on stage, and as the good vibes made their way through the summer air, Cuomo grew more and more comfortable with the people who had gathered to see him perform.

The set climaxed when Cuomo hopped off the stage and bounced into the masses, guitar in hand. Mortified security guards could do little but hope as a relaxed Cuomo made his way through the adoring audience before returning eventually to the stage, unscathed. Rock stars might be in the music business, but they're also in the moment business, and Rivers Cuomo created one with his impromptu foray into the unknown.

Weezer hits like "Perfect Situation" and "Undone (The Sweater Song)" and a cover of Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" had the packed house bobbing to the beat, and as the evening turned to night, it became abundantly clear that everyone had come here to have a good time, and that everyone was.

That good time got better as Cumo began "Island in the Sun" spotlighted on stage. As the song grew around him, his bandmates appeared, and the metaphor was clear. Cuomo is the star of the show, but the rest of the team know their roles, and do a damn good job of it. Guitarist Bryan Bell, suffering from strep throat, went about his business elegantly while managing to look largely unimpressed by it all.

Weezer is a great rock band in a very casual way. They have fun on stage, and they're fun to watch. They're just famous enough that people get pretty excited to see them, but no so famous that people get unhealthily excited. They manage to acknowledge their awesomeness without being arrogant, perfect for this (or any) summer evening.

With their blend of charisma and indifference, Cuomo and Co project a veneer of casual apathy. But you get the sense that beneath that apparent indifference is a very solid rock band with a very solid message: life is short, so why not have a little fun?
