The arbitration hearing between the Nashville Predators and their star defenseman, Shea Weber, has come and gone. On August 3, the 25-year-old was awarded $7.5 million for one more year of play in Nashville.

The result of this hearing is record-breaking, as the previous highest arbitration awards were worth $7 million, given to John LeClair in 2000 and Scott Niedermayer in 2004. This award is a million less than what Weber was rumored to have originally asked for. This award will likely help lead negotiations in Los Angeles between the Kings and their defenseman Drew Doughty.

-- Patrick Sharp signed a five-year contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks. According to capgeek.com, the contract is worth $29.5 million. This was a brilliant move on the Hawks part, as they have now strengthened their core group of players. Sharp will remain in Chicago long-term along with Duncan Keith, Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Kane.

-- San Jose signed former New Jersey Devils veteran defenseman Colin White to a one-year, $1 million contract. White’s final year with the Devils was bought out on Tuesday. This move will hopefully help solidify the Sharks' defense as they make another run for the Cup this season.
