After a brief stop in New York City, MTV’s annual music awards show returns to Los Angeles live from the Nokia Theatre Sunday evening.

Despite the decreasing music video presence on the network, MTV continues to get the biggest names in music to perform and appear at the show. Here’s a preview of what to expect at this year’s moon-walking event.

PERFORMANCES

Two years ago, Lady Gaga delivered a performance dangling from a ceiling with plenty of blood. This year, Gaga returns to the VMA stage to open the show. No word on what the superstar will be performing … or wearing.

Making a rare appearance, Beyonce is set to perform live at the show. She is expected to sing a song from her latest album, “4.”

In addition, Adele, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Jessie J, Bruno Mars and Young the Giant are all expected to perform in the short two-hour long show.

SURPRISES

Several surprise guests will pay tribute to Britney Spears at this Sunday’s award show. The music star, who recently finished her successful “Femme Fatale” tour in the United States, is hoping one of the songs in her tribute will be “Baby, One More Time.”

For movie fans, actress Jennifer Lawrence will attend the show to give fans an exclusive sneak-peek at the upcoming film, “The Hunger Games,” set to hit theatres in 2012.

NOMINEES

Adele is favored to win big given her seven nominations including Video of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep.” Her competition includes Katy Perry’s “Firework,” The Beastie Boy’s “Make Some Noise,” Bruno Mar’s “Grenade” and Tyler, The Creator’s “Yonkers.”

Another award to look out for is Best Male Video. Justin Bieber goes up against Cee Lo Green, Eminem, Bruno Mars and Kanye West.

The MTV Video Music Awards airs on Sunday at 9 PM EST on MTV. The preshow, featuring the red carpet hosted by Selena Gomez, will air at 8 PM EST.

In addition, don’t miss a surprise new episode of “Jersey Shore” before the awards show and red carpet at 7 PM EST on MTV.
