The Most Unpopular Congress Ever: Approval Rating Hits Historic Low

Disapprove of the job the current Congress is doing? Well, you're hardly alone. The latest New York Times/CBS News poll reveals that in the wake of the debt-ceiling negotiations, 82 percent of Americans now disapprove of the way Congress is performing. That's the highest that figure has been since the poll was first conducted back in 1977.

Another poll also finds congressional approval hitting a record low. According to the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll, the approval rating for Congress stands at a paltry 14 percent following the debt ceiling debate.

This marks the just third time in the CNN poll's history that the approval rating for Congress has slipped below 20 percent. The other two times: in March of 1992, when congressional approval was at 18 percent, and in June of 1979 when it was at 19 percent.

Here are some other notable numbers from the New York Times/CBS News poll, which measured public opinion in the wake of the debt ceiling negotiations:

  • Americans were pretty evenly divided about President Obama's job performance during the negotiations, with 46 percent approving and 47 percent disapproving.
  • The public's opinion of the Tea Party has gone down following the debt negotiations: 40 percent now disapprove of the movement, while just 20 percent view it favorably.
  • All told, Republicans came out looking worse than the Democrats during the debt crisis, with 72 percent disapproving of the way Republicans in Congress handled the negotiations, compared to the 66 percent which disapproved of the way Democrats handled them.

Clearly the latest numbers paint a pretty bleak picture of how Americans view Congress. However, our elected representatives can at least focus on the one bright spot of these polls: some Americans still actually approve of the way Congress is doing its job.
