August has started off on the right track for Doug Wilson. The San Jose Sharks signed Brent Burns to a five-year $28.8 million contract extension. Burns will now stay in San Jose for six years.

There was only one year left on Burns’ contract when he was traded to San Jose for Dany Heatley. Since Wilson had expressed interest in keeping him for the long haul, it was only a matter of time before an announcement like this was made. This type of contract extension truly shows how much faith Wilson has in Burns. This past season in Minnesota, the 25-year-old posted 17 goals, 29 assists, 46 points, and 98 PIM in 80 games. These numbers are fairly impressive compared to the figures that Heatley posted last season: 26 goals, 38 assists, 64 points, and 56 PIM in 80 games.

It will be interesting to see how Burns will fare in San Jose as fans look to him to help the team win the cup. The Sharks are perennial playoff contenders, while the Wild are not. Burns will now play on a team that will support and help him grow into an even better player. While we do not yet know what line he will play on, we can only anticipate an exciting season, as the San Jose Sharks just got that much closer to winning the cup.
