The 2004-2005 season was a bleak year in the history of the NHL.

However, this painful time had to happen. Life is all about change, and as fans we cannot expect our favorite teams and leagues to operate the same way today as they originally did. The NHL was founded in 1917, while the NFL and NBA were founded in 1920 and 1946, respectively. It really should come as no surprise that change is needed, as the MLB has already had a few bumps in its 142-year history. So, instead of being upset that these leagues potentially face lockout-shortened seasons, fans should be happy that their players and teams are improving their ways to make the game better for those involved.

With that said, and with Monday’s news that the NFL has reached a deal and will have a full season, as a hockey fan I think it will benefit the NHL if the NBA does not play next season.

Basketball and football really do take away viewers from NHL games.

This year, the Boston Bruins’ unbelievable Stanley Cup win was slightly overshadowed by the NBA playoffs.

The NHL’s Winter Classic is typically played on January 1st. However, this year it will be played on the 2nd because the 1st is a Sunday, which would mean a ratings competition against the NFL.Since acquiring viewers for the Winter Classic is a feat in and of itself, the NHL is breaking from tradition and playing a day later.

But the most frustrating conflict lies with the NBA and NHL schedule. Both leagues play during the same time, which means that they share playoff schedules. The NHL cannot alter their schedule for the whole season to help lure more hockey fans, so hockey is left to hope for the best as it competes against the juggernaut that is basketball.

If the basketball season is not played this fall, it is imperative that the NHL take the opportunity to garner as many new fans as possible.

Hockey games will be the perfect fit to fill the void in the depressed basketball fans’ hearts. With young and exciting players like Logan Couture, Steven Stamkos, Drew Doughty, Jonathan Toews, PK Subban, Bobby Ryan, and the ever famous Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby taking the game to a whole new level, it is close to impossible not to fall in love with this sport.

The NHL has been waiting for a big break like this, and I do hope they get their time to shine. With Tim Thomas’ and the Boston Bruins’ amazing play during the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs, this opportunity could not come at a better time.

The excitement from their win would be the perfect momentum to transition into a year where the NHL can reign supreme in primetime television.
