Celebrities Race To Raise Money For The Cure Of Pediatric Cancer
The race, presented by JB Products, was part of the second annual “Kids Against Cancer Night.” The event was held to raise money for the Kids Against Cancer organization, specifically the cure of pediatric cancer. Families with children who are cancer survivors attended.
The nine “celebracers” each drove NASCAR stock cars that were built at the Racecar Factory in Irwindale, about a mile from the track. The cars featured a Chevy V-8 engine and the professional window-style entry.
The “celebracers” included actors Kim Coates, William Fichtner, Christopher Knight, Frankie Muniz, Riki Rachtman, Peter Shinkoda and Rex Winters; and KLTA Channel 5 News weathermen Dallas Raines and Mark Kriski. Fichtner and Muniz were neck-and-neck during the race, but Fichtner ended up winning by seven-hundreths of a second.
The night featured not only the celebrity race, but also other races and a silent auction. The other races were the Jan's Towing Bandoleros race (20 laps), the Auto Club Late Models race (40 laps), the Echo Equipment Legend Cars race (30 laps), the Southwest Tour Trucks race (25 laps), and the Boat Race. The silent auction had a variety of racing items, such as autographed helmets and invitations to join the stars on set as behind-the-scenes guests.
