A Postcard From Whitey Bulger's Former Santa Monica Residence
Following the arrest of South Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger, Neon Tommy visited his former residence to take the pulse of the area and see how people in the neighborhood were reacting to the knowledge that one of the U.S.'s most notorious criminals had been living under their noses. After a 16-year search, Bulger and his girlfriend were arrested in their Santa Monica, Calif. apartment on June 22. The 81-year-old mobster -- a former FBI informant wanted for 19 counts of murder -- fled in 1994 just before his federal racketeering indictment.
He was placed on the FBI's Most Wanted list, with a reward of $2 million. His capture is credited to a tip from Iceland.
Bulger is currently back in Boston for his trial, with court-appointed legal counsel J.W. Carney. Charges of racketeering have been dropped. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday July 6 at 2 p.m.
