Sen. John McCain criticized the 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls, Sunday, for their lack of support for U.S. military.

Despite heavy pressure to reduce U.S. military involvement in the Afghanistan and Libya, McCain said an early detachment from conflicts in the area will mean repeating past mistakes.

"We abandoned Afghanistan once, and we paid a very heavy price for it in the attacks of 9/11," McCain said. "So that is an important lesson that we must learn."

Citing progress in the area, McCain said the tasks must be completed before leaving in order to keep peace in the area.

"I wish that candidate Romney and all the others would sit down" with General David Petraeus, commander of the war in Afghanistan, "and understand how this counterinsurgency is working and succeeding," McCain said.

McCain also addressed the U.S. military action in Libya proposing that without continuing pressure, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi will grow to be harmful to the U.S. in the future.

"If Gadhafi remains in power, it's clear that you will see him engage in an escalated effort, of course, to harm the United States of America, obviously," McCain said.

In regards to the bipartisan attack of the Obama administration in an allegedly illegal military action in Libya, McCain said a co-sponsored resolution would be required.

From ABC News

Although McCain criticized Obama for "leading from behind" by having NATO take charge of the operation, he encouraged Congress to pass his co-sponsored resolution with Senator John Kerry (D-MA) giving congressional authorization for U.S. military involvement in Libya, which reached the 90-day mark today.
