Sarah Palin insists she knows her American history, saying Sunday she was correct in asserting that Paul Revere "warned the British that they weren't gonna be takin' away our arms," during his famous midnight ride from Boston in 1775.

The former 2008 vice presidential candidate defended her comments during an appearance on "Fox News Sunday." "I didn’t mess up about Paul Revere," she told host Chris Wallace. "Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there that 'hey, you're not going to take American arms, you are not going to beat our own well-armed persons individual private militia that we have." 

Palin, who serves as a paid contributor on Fox News, she concluded, "In a shout-out, gotcha type of question that was asked of me, I answered candidly. And I know my American history.”

Palin, a potential 2012 GOP presidential contender, was asked about the Revolutionary War here on Thursday during a stop in Boston on her national bus tour. Her response: "He who warned, uh, the British that they weren't going to be taking away our arms uh by ringing those bells and making sure as he's riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free and we were going to be armed."

On  April 18, 1775, Revere rode out from Boston to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that British troops were marching to Lexington to arrest them.
