Politics Today: Weiner And The Porn Star, Jon Stewart Calls Weinergate Scandal “Sad,” And More

The “Weinergate” scandal seems to be getting more bizarre by the day. A day after embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) admitted to having “inappropriate” electronic relationships with several women, TMZ uncovered another angle involving porn star Ginger Lee.

According to TMZ, Weiner and Lee “exchanged scores of sexual emails over a long period of time.  When the underwear scandal broke on May 28, Lee began receiving calls from the media, and Weiner was more than happy to help her control the situation ... by lying.”

TMZ reported that Weiner emailed her to ask if she needed a public relations person to give her advice, and that he could “have someone on my team call. [Yeah, my team is doing great. Ugh]”

He also offered Lee advice, telling her that, among other things she should use some southern charm, "And then maybe insert some y'alls in there."

Radar Online on Tuesday released “sext messages” that were reportedly from a nine-month relationship between Weiner and a 40-year-old Las Vegas blackjack dealer.

Among one of the last messages: "u owe me big time for keeping this all quiet…i am defending u to the death on every blog and
to everyone….telling everyone u would never send dirty messages to women."

Member of Weiner’s own party are turning up the heat on the congressman after his admission that he sent a racy photo of himself over Twitter to a 21-year-old Seattle women and lied about it.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called for a House Ethics probe of Weiner hours after his confession, which other Democrats have backed.

One Republican, however, called the ethics probe “hollow,” noting a difference in Pelosi’s reaction to former GOP Rep. Chris Lee after he went through his own digital sex scandal while she was still Speaker of the House.

According to CNN: “The GOP source said it is noteworthy that Pelosi called for an investigation but did not demand Weiner step down -- as happened with former Rep. Chris Lee. The married Republican from western New York resigned in February, following a report that he had tried to meet a woman on Craigslist.”

Republicans, meantime, are now targeting Democrats who received campaign contributions from Weiner.

The Huffington Post reported: “Both the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee blasted out press releases calling for Democrats to return Weiner's ‘tainted’ money.”
According to federal election data, Weiner donated $75,000 in the last election cycle.

The Huffington Post also noted that 14 Republicans who received money from former Rep. Chris Lee did not give the money back following his scandal.

At least one television personality was friendly to Weiner in the wake of his admission. “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, normally not one to practice restraint, did just that on his show Monday night show, saying the Weiner scandal had become “officially sad” following the press conference.

Last week, Stewart said the two were old friends as he defended Weiner when the scandal first broke.

By Monday night, Stewart had changed his tune a bit. "This is the weirdest f**king story I've seen in my life!" he said. "Or, the best episode of 'Maury' EVER."

Watch Stewart’s take here.

Some good news for Weiner: a majority of New York City voters do not want him to resign his seat. According to a poll taken hours after Monday's press conference, 51 percent believe the congressman should keep his seat. However, a majority of voters--56 percent--do not think Weiner should run for mayor of the city in 2013.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told CNN's Piers Morgan in an interview Monday night that former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin did not overshadow his announcement that he was running for president last week.

“She really didn't ruin my day. In a lot respects, it's the best thing that could happen to me,” he said. Right now, your greatest enemy is overexposure. People get tired of seeing the same person day in and day out."

Palin visited Romney’s hometown and attacked his record as the Governor of Massachusetts the same day he launched his presidential campaign in New Hampshire.

Sarah Palin is still mulling over her own possible presidential bid, but a new poll suggests the majority of Americans would not vote for her. According to the latest Washington Post/ABC News Poll, nearly two-thirds of voters “definitely would not” vote for her if she ran for president, including 42 percent from her own Party.

More bad news for Palin: in a head-to-head matchup against President Obama, she lost by 17 percentage points—the biggest loss of the other six possible challengers the poll tested.
