Over 500,000 people attend the LA Pride Festival each year, according to the event website. The celebration is produced by Christopher Street West, a non-profit organization that works for the rights and protection of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Proposition 8 - the voter-approved measure outlawing same sex marriage  is currently in legal limbo. This was on the minds of many of the festival's attendees.

In August, Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled that proposition 8 violated federal human rights. After retiring, Walker revealed that he is gay and is in a relationship with another man. Prop 8's supporters claimed Walker's homosexuality made him biased towards the legalization of gay marriage. U.S. District Chief Judge James Ware rejected the charge Wednesday and upheld Walker's ruling.

"We all have an equal stake in a case that challenges the constitutionality of a restriction on a fundamental right,” Ware said, as quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Prop 8 case is expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
