Hockey Happenings: June 2011
-Boston Bruins’ goalie Tim Thomas responds to Vancouver Canucks’ goalie Roberto Luongo’s Game 5 press conference comments.
"It's not hard if you're playing in the paint," Luongo said. "It's an easy save for me, but if you're wandering out and aggressive like he does, that's going to happen.”
Thomas stayed silent until he spoke to the media Sunday.
He made some jokes and also talked about being part of a “goaltender union.”
“I stick with other goalies, on being one and knowing what it takes to perform at this level,” Thomas said.
-Vancouver Canucks forward Manny Malhotra, who suffered an eye injury in March and hasn’t played since, was medically cleared to play right before the finals and made his debut back on the ice in Game 2, where he was greeted with a standing ovation and fans chanting his name. He has since played in Game 3, 4 and 5 of the finals.
-Sidney Crosby will be working with his personal trainer for about three weeks in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, on a summer workout program. Dr. Michael Collins, a concussion specialist, will be keeping a close eye on Crosby’s progress. On-ice workouts will not begin until end of July or early August.
-Trevor Gretzky, son of Wayne, has been drafted by the Chicago Cubs (in the seventh round). The first baseman from Oaks Christian High School (Westlake Village, Calif.) has until August 15 to decide if he wants to go to San Diego State or straight to the pros.
-The Atlanta Thrashers will be officially moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, after the sale and franchise move is approved by the NHL in late June. True North Sports and Entertainment announced their acquisition in May. Thrashers captain Andrew Ladd visited the city and said he thinks the move will be good for the team.
-Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson underwent surgery on his lower back on June 10. The 39-year-old has been dealing with pain from a pinched nerve for some time now. After the surgery, he will have about 4 to 6 months of rehab.
-Travelers will be able to dine at the brand new and recently named Anaheim Ducks Breakaway Bar & Grill at the John Wayne Airport in Orange County later this year. The name for the Ducks-themed restaurant was chosen by the fans.
-Phoenix Coyotes’ goalie Ilya Bryzgalov has been traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. The Coyotes will get a conditional draft choice, forward Matt Clackson and the Flyers’ 3rd round draft choice in 2012.
