In the world of tech, as in life, the saying applies: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Google took this to heart with one highly publicized none-success. With the limited release of Google's new social media, Google+, the company addresses its previous shortcomings and takes aim at two competitors in Facebook and Microsoft.

Buzz, Google's first attempt at social networking, had multiple challenges. Apart from user privacy management, Google admitted the lack of public feedback also attributed to the failure of their social network.

"We've been testing Buzz internally at Google for a while. Of course, getting feedback from 20,000 Googlers isn't quite the same as letting Gmail users play with Buzz in the wild," Google said in an interview with the BBC.

This time around, Google is focused on building around user feedback by inviting early adopters and opening a public forum for discussion of the project. And, in one major change from the last go, Google is providing users the ability to create their own social "Circles" instead of automatically creating social groups from their contact list.

The project itself offers the integration of several things users have grown accustomed to on multiple platforms.

Circles:

With Circles, user are able to create specific groups to communicate with (e.g. family, work, social clubs, etc.), similar to chat groups, contact lists, etc. Or as Google puts it, "sharing the right stuff with the right people."

Sparks:

Sparks allow users to bookmark the best contents from the Internet to consume later. Save videos, articles, and photos for when you have time later.

Hangouts:

With Hangouts, Google is attempting to bring, "the best parts of going out and about." In so doing, Hangouts allows users to invite friends to virtual group meetings. Within it, the invitees can interact via video and instant messaging.

The Google+ experience is also implanted on the mobile platform with instant uploading of photos and group messaging features.

The integration of social interaction through multimedia is clearly an aim at Facebook with an attempt to cover some ground in the monopolistic world of social networking. But what may not be so clear is the danger that Microsoft will face with Google+.

Google has already made its intentions clear to Microsoft with the development of Google Docs--web-based office document clone. But, with the growth of Google+, the company will claim dominance in the enterprise market as well according to industry analyst Brad Shimmin.

From Computerworld

"The one major downfall of Google Apps has been a lack of a unifying social experience. They've had some social tools inside different products but they haven't had anything to sort of bring them together. This is a very necessary and long-overdue step."

Other analysts like Ezra Gottheil agree with Shimmin, adding companies are looking for new way to encourage productivity.

"The Circles feature in Google+ would enable people to more easily communicate with and share documents with different work groups or project teams, for instance," Gottheil said to Computerworld. "And the platform's Hangouts feature could allow users to hold video conferences with multiple geographically-dispersed co-workers."
