Britney spears, now 30, has made a new music video for her hit single, "Hold It Against Me." She spends the video floating in some sort of metal capsule, surrounded by security cameras and wearing a stark white wedding dress. While suspended, she rotates around as the fabric flies behind her. As the video nears its end, she continues to spin, unleashing multicolored paint from her robotic fingers, ‘graffiting’ her gown.

Let’s go back in time, 12 years back, to the year 1999. Alexander McQueen is showing his spring collection. Model after model walk down the wooden runway. It is time for the finale, and model Shalom Harlow steps onto a spinning platform, wearing a simple, white, skirted McQueen dress. As she spins, robotic arms come toward her from either side, spraying a pattern onto her once bare dress. This show proved to the fashion world that the designer known as ‘l’enfant terrible’ was not just a boy, but a capable designer who is able to exist within a serious high-fashion community. Similarly, with her recent comeback, Brit Brit has set out to prove to the music industry that she is capable as well.

There is a fine line between appreciation and appropriation. It is up to Ms. Spears’ fans to decide if it has been crossed.
