And who will take her spot? Again, no surprise.

TMZ reports Scott Pelley, a correspondent for "60 Minutes," will take the anchor's desk.

Pelley could make his announcement, if indeed he is replacing Couric, as early as next week, according to the New York Daily New.

Couric made her announcement in People magazine, which will publish a longer version of its exclusive interview with Couric on Friday.

The veteran journalist, whose contract with "CBS Evening News" ends in June, is reportedly in talks to host a talk show on CBS.

"I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling," Couric told People.

But details of the show are still being hammered out.

Her success in talk shows would depend heavily on the stations and time periods she commands, says Bill Carroll, who advises local stations on syndicated programming for Katz Television Group. With a launch in the thick of a presidential election campaign, interest in an issues-oriented show could be high. But with Oprah Winfrey departing next month, successors to key late-afternoon time slots have already been claimed by Dr. Oz, Ellen DeGeneres and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

"Can she succeed? Sure," Carroll says. "But we're going through a period of shift. In the same way Oprah was a game-changer, Oprah leaving is a game-changer. The process begins this fall and then we'll see what the landscape is."

"The bottom line is that I love doing all kinds of different stories," Couric told People. "I have a lot of areas of interest and I want to be able to fulfill all of that."

Couric leaves "CBS Evening News" third in the ratings behind "NBC Nightly News" and ABC's "World News."

The anchor position is reportedly Pelley's to lose, because he is well-liked by CBS executives.

“There is some risk in this for Pelley and for CBS News,” Dan Rather said. “But it’s a risk worth taking. And if they do it, I think they will succeed.”
