Much to the dismay of fans of hit comedy show, “The Office,” Steve Carell announced last year that he would soon be leaving the cast, which he has headed since 2005.

Many viewers and critics have since predicted that Carell’s absence will lead to the show’s demise, but with a crucial new addition to the cast, “The Office’s” popularity might not be at stake after all.

It appears that preparations are starting to be made to fill the void that will be left by Carell’s quirky character, Michael Scott, with the introduction of a new, equally eccentric boss.

Tonight’s episode marks the debut of a brand new character, the office’s new manager, DeAngelo Vickers, who is played by comedy legend Will Ferrell.

See a sneak preview of DeAngelo’s first episode here.

Judging by Ferrell’s rich comedic history and his laugh-worthy interactions with other Dunder Mifflin employees as shown in the previews, DeAngelo Vickers will likely be the next best thing to the notorious Michael Scott.

Despite the promise of Ferrell’s success on the show, Carell will be greatly missed. Costar John Krasinski is quoted as saying in a March interview, “no one can replace him.”

Whether Carell is irreplaceable or not, former guest star Ricky Gervais has an optimistic view of the show’s fate without Michael Scott. He recently said during an appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” that “they’ve got loads of people to play the boss,” suggesting that “The Office” is by no means in danger of cancellation in the near future.

“The Office” airs on NBC tonight at 9 pm.
