A titan of the cinematic world is gone this morning, as Sidney Lumet passed away at the age of 86.

Initially an actor in his youth, Lumet began to direct with great success, having over 50 films to his name.

Lumet's greatest films were intricately wrought dramas, and in his career he directed such classics as "Dog Day Afternoon," "Serpico," and "12 Angry Men."

Despite having such a storied career, Lumet never won a directing Oscar, although he was nominated 4 times, and directed 14 Oscar-winning films.

Lumet died in New York City this morning in the care of family, having dedicated much of his career to films that featured the city heavily.
